The construction industry would not survive without concrete, which serves as the essential foundation for any structure. With this type of work, a variety of projects can be done. This list, however, focuses on commercial contracting and presents firms that have some of the highest revenues in the concrete contracting industry.

The firms were also selected for their capability when it comes to safety, management skills, teamwork, and the ability to maintain building relationships. Thanks to their high-quality products, the firms in this list have been recognized in Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) rankings and have been granted awards like the Safety Awards or the Excellence in Construction Award. We tried to find concrete contractors near you, wherever you are in the USA.

In addition to awards and rankings, these firms also carry certifications from significant industry organizations like the American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA), the American Subcontractors Association (ASA), and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) which exhibits a contractor’s ability in testing, construction, and inspection of concrete.

 

Bedrock Concrete LLC

Though only established in 2013 by Beau Hahn, Bedrock Concrete LLC’s team has decades of experience in concrete construction solutions and buildings. The firm specializes in commercial, industrial, and retail concrete construction,  resulting in a variety of projects like municipality walkways, special foundations for gas stations, office building parking lots, large scale concrete construction projects, and entire concrete structures. The firm works throughout the entire Kansas City metro area, as well as in Johnson and Wyandotte county. The firm also works in Missouri’s Jackson, Clay, PLatte, and Cass counties.


Miller Builders

Before Miller Builders grew into the company capable of housing 200 trained craftsmen, it was just a small proprietorship. But like many budding enterprises, the firm had the goal of creating something new and relevant for its local community. Since its establishment in 1986, Miller Builders has become a member of key organizations like the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the AGCA. The firm’s founder, Mike Miller, is also known for his skill in overseeing each aspect of the project without losing his attention to detail. Miller previouslyhad 12 years of experience as Vantage Construction’s field superintendent.

Thanks to his commitment to quality workmanship and service, the firm has grown 23 years to be regarded as a reputable concrete construction company. One example of the firm’s capabilities is the First Industrial Bammel Road. A 360,000 square foot project designed by architect Powers Brown, it has seven buildings and 21,674 cubic yards of concrete. Similar projects have also been completed in the Houston Metroplex, and throughout the state of Texas in cities like Beaumont, Waco, San Marcos, and Harlingen.


Hemma Concrete

Established in 2003, Hemma Concrete was previously a small company that soon grew to be one of the largest concrete contractors in the Southeast. President Matt Cogbill currently controls all aspects of the company. Cogbill has also worked for large general contractors and specialty subcontractors in the heavy civil and commercial industries. 

His experience within these services is a huge advantage, as the firm work with both residential and commercial services. In 2006, Hemma Concrete began working with structural concrete, which has become the firm’s fastest-growing division. The firm has also completed a wide variety of projects, ranging in size from $10k to $135 million.


Keystone Concrete

Keystone Concrete, previously known as Stewart Builders Inc., was founded in 1992. The firm specializes in concrete placement, structural concrete, landscape, residential, and sitework, and services Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. The firm successfully places over 1,000,000 cubic yards of concrete annually for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects—a feat possible because of the company’s 1,500 skilled employees and excellent safety record. A great example of the firm’s work can be found in 3737 Buffalo Speedway. Built for IQI Construction, it is a 20 story office tower with seven levels of CAST in place garage and a foundation for precast parking garage.


Cleveland Cement Contractors

Cleveland Cement Contractors is a concrete specialist with a high level of competence and integrity. Established in 1944, Cleveland Cement Contractors is a member of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGCA), and the American Builders and Contractors (ABC). For over 60 years, this accredited firm has provided exceptional concrete construction services, gaining a reputation for quality workmanship presented with timely delivery.

The firm works with the finest architects, engineers, and building contractors to construct projects like the University of Virginia, Liberty University, and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Along with these projects is the company’s work on the Progressive Campus II. Designed by architect Bialosky and Partners, the scope of work included footings, foundations, and floors for multiple buildings, the design and construction of three multi-level, long span, post tensioned beam and slab garages. Northland Concrete & Masonry Company

Northland Concrete and Masonry Company have provided award-winning concrete and masonry work since Doug Schieffer established the firm in 1963. Recent accolades include the Minnesota Concrete and Masonry Contractors Association’s (MC and MCA) 2014 residential award for the firm’s work on Oaks Station, and the 2015 MC and MCA commercial award for the Masonry office and Retail Cabelas-Woodbury. The firm was also ranked #236 in the ENR’s 2015 Top 600 Specialty Contractors. This quick growth was rooted in quality craftsmanship, a good reputation, and a routine commitment to excellence has given the company the capacity to service projects of ranging size.


Danko Concrete Construction

A service-oriented concrete construction company, Danko Concrete Construction was established in 1998 and caters to retail, manufacturing and industrial concrete needs of general contractors, developers, and owners throughout the Southeastern U.S. Though the firm works with many diverse customers, the firm specializes in large scale buildings and produces projects that range in size from 100,000 to 1,000,000+ square feet. The firm is only 20 years old, but is known as an award winning company with a membership in the TCA. Danko has installed more than 20 million square feet of warehouses and distribution facilities through the Southeast. One example of its work is Project Murphy in Lambert Farms Logistics Park in McDonough city. Known as Georgia’s largest warehouse, it is a 1.6 million square foot building that required 1 million square feet of concrete pavement and 270,000 square feet of concrete panels.


Donley’s

Established in 1941, Donley’s has had a long and varied history. By 1969, the company had shortened its name to Donley’s under Terry K. Donley’s leadership, and expanded its services in the concrete market. By the 1980s, the firm had involved itself in general contracting and construction management. Over the years, Donley’s has placed 750,000 cubic yards of concrete, delivered 25,000 parking deck spaces, and built Case Western Reserve University and Tinkham Veale University Center which won the 2014 Build Ohio award for a new construction over $20 million. Though many aspects of its work contribute to its accomplishments, one aspect of the firm’s success is the third and fourth generations of families who continue to remain loyal as company employees.
Over the last 15 years, Donley has expanded its services first to Virginia, then Maryland, before moving into North and South Carolina, and Georgia.

A great example of the Donley’s work is Summa Health’s West Tower. A joint venture with Shook Construction Co., this project involved the construction of the new six-story west bed tower. 331,000 square feet wide, the tower served as the hospital’s new main entrance and housed two 36-bed medical/surgical units with all private rooms, a breast center, eight new operating rooms, 65 same-day surgery rooms, and a women’s health center that includes a 36-bed post-partum unit.


TB Penick and sons

TB Penick and Sons was established in 1905. Today, the firm recognized as a capable pioneer with new and better delivery methods. Carrying over 111 years of experience, TB Penick and Sons completes projects in all 50 states, and has worked on three continents, as well as Guam. The firm’s work uses a variety of delivery methods, including design-build, lease-leaseback, Construction Management at Risk, Agency Construction Management, and negotiated general contracting. The firm also has self-performing capabilities that include structural concrete and innovative architectural concrete solutions.

Some of the firm’s most popular projects are San Diego landmarks—Seaworld, Balboa Park, and the San Diego Convention Center, which was a 1.25 million square foot expansion done with architectural firms HNTB Architects and Tucker Sadler. Another great example of the firm’s iconic works is the Atlanta Botanical Garden—a garden project that won the Wow! Ceco Concrete Construction

Ceco Concrete Construction is one of several companies comprising the Heico Construction Group—a group of companies owned by the parent holding company Heico. Ceco Concrete Construction was established in 1912, and is both a formwork and full frame structural concrete contractor, specializing in structural concrete construction. Each year, the firm builds more than 200 projects, representing 20 million square feet. The firm’s president, Jim Schwamman, has handled numerous roles at Ceco, including District Manager, Vice President for the Western Region, and most recently Vice President of Southern Operations.

One of Ceco Concrete Construction’s most notable projects is the Banner Estrella Medical Center Addition, which won ENR’s Best Projects Healthcare—Southwest award and the Top Overall Safety award. The firm also worked on Nashville’s Music City Center. A five-level concrete convention center and multi-use facility, this project was completed in less than a year and covers six full city blocks in downtown Nashville.


Kent Companies

A third generation family-owned business, Kent Companies is the 12th largest concrete contractor nationwide and employs over 1,300 concrete construction professionals. Since its establishment in 1975, the firm has become an expert in commercial and industrial construction, mixed-use construction, multi-family housing, tilt up concrete, post tensioned cast-in-place structures, and a full-range of concrete related specialties.

One example of the firm’s work is Tanger Outlets. Built for Rockford Construction, it was a challenging project that required a mastery of scheduling and intricate design, as well as the capability to work with limited space. The team installed 23,000 linear feet of curb and gutter, over 195,000 square feet of sidewalks, 64,000 square feet of pavement, and 120 decorative bollards. This project won the Excellence in Construction Award from the ABC.

The firm was also ranked in ENR’s Top 13 Concrete Contractors nationwide and has won many awards. Its most recent and notable award is the Associated Builders and contractors’ 2018 Award of Excellence in Pre-Cast Concrete.


TAS Commercial Concrete Construction inc.

A firm that ranked #77 in ENR’s 2017 Top 600 list, TAS Commercial Concrete Construction Inc. is a general contractor specializing in commercial, structural, and industrial concrete. It was established as a small general contracting firm in 1980 with a team of just 20 people. Today, the TAS team has over 1,500 employees in offices serving the Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Austin/San Antonio commercial markets. Soon enough, TAS gathered countless awards, was ranked 14th in ENR’s 2013 Texas Louisiana Top Specialty Contractors, and garnered the Texas Construction Magazine’s Best of Awards. The firm is also a member of organizations like the AGCA, ASA, ACI, TCA, and the ASCC.

The firm also participates in the community and contributed services to the Veterans’ Memorial in Sugarland, Texas, and the Brookwood community, which provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging, and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities. This community has the Annual Golf Marathon Benefit, which TAS employees have contributed to for over 20 years.


WM Winkler Co.

Established in 1919 by Brian Winkler, WM Winkler Co. has the combination of an incredible team, high-quality tools, and a large well-organized shop that helps the team work productively to complete massive projects. In the early 2000s, WM Winkler Co. poured the foundation for the new Central Valley High School but beyond that, the firm has tackled unique challenges, like working on the ground floor for an ice rink, and completing the original grout for a roller coaster track. Outside of Washington, the firm has worked in Alaska, North Dakota, Illinois, Montana, and Oregon.

More of the firm’s projects have resulted in awards. WM Winkler Co. won the 49th Annual Excellence in Concrete Construction Award for Public Works Renovation. It has also received awards from the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association (WAGCA), and has won two 2017 Associated General Contractors (AGC)’s awards for technology in construction. In addition to these awards, WM Winkler Co. has also been featured in magazines like Equipment World Magazine, The Splash Magazine, and Liberty Lake Roundabout.


Lithko Contracting LLC

One of the country’s largest concrete contractors, Lithko Contracting LLC has held the #2 ranking on ENR’s Top Concrete Contractor list for the past two years. The firm also received the ABC of Excellence in Construction Eagle Award for “Specialty Project of the Year,” and was included in Inc.’s 5000 list. In the same year, the ENR also included it in the top 600 specialty contractors. One of the firm’s most notable projects is its work on Mars Chocolate North America’s $270 million plant near Topeka, Kansas. Achieving LEED Gold certification, the project used unique concrete mixes that contained recycled materials. With these materials, the firm constructed four buildings with insulated tilt panels.

As a full-service concrete contractor, Lithko contracting is capable of building small commercial buildings, large warehouses, and multi-level structural buildings. It also has experience in placing more than 40 million square feet of slabs, tilt-up, and precast per year. In addition to the firm’s experience in placing over 2 million cubic yards of concrete per year, Lithko also has substantial experience with cast-in place, steel frame, heavy structure, concrete cores, and elaborate sitework.


McHugh Construction

Most recognizable as a premier builder of distinctive structures in Chicago and across the Midwest, McHugh Construction specializes in high-rise concrete construction, historic restoration, special-use projects, and infrastructure works. The company has produced some of Chicago’s most complex and recognizable structures, including the Marina City, Trump Tower,  Blackstone Hotel, Navy Pier’s Centennial Wheel, and Aqua Tower.

As expected, this firm has won countless awards for many of its projects, but its most notable award-winning project is the Aqua Tower. An 82 story, 2.3 million square foot mixed-use tower, the Aqua Tower includes 750 residential units, a 334-room Radisson Blu hotel, office space, a 1,000 vehicle parking garage, and retail. The Aqua Tower has won numerous distinguished awards, including the Distinguished Building Award from the AIA Chicago and the 2012 Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies. In 2009, it was also named Emporis International Skyscraper of the Year.

Because of projects like these, the firm has a reputation for leadership and innovation in general contracting, dating back to its establishment in 1897. After a few decades of working across the country, it expanded its services and included high-rise concrete construction and complex, large scale projects for both the public and private sectors.


Joseph J. Albanese Inc. (JJA)

Founded in 1955, Joseph J. Albanese Inc. is a member of numerous organizations, including the United Contractors (UCON), the ASCC, the ACI, the American Shotcrete Association (ASA), and the American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA). The firm was also recently took the 14th place for 2018’s top 20 concrete contractors. In 2013, the ACI also named one of the firm’s works Structure of The Year. The firm’s president and CEO, Kevin J. Albanese, was exposed to the construction business at a young age. He served as the company’s COO before assuming his current role. Albanese was recognized as a top 40 under 40 by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, and was included in ENR’s Top 20 Under 40.

The firm has completed many impressive projects, including Levi’s Stadium. In just four weeks, the firm did 178,000 square feet of architectural concrete flatwork, and 3,200 linear feet of site poured-in-place and shotcrete walls. All in all, the project required 120,000 square feet of architectural concrete.


Baker Concrete Construction

stablished in 1968 by Dan Baker and his brothers, Jim and Ken Baker, Baker Concrete Construction has done a wide variety of projects. With over 50 years of experience, the firm has completed work in over 1,200 cities and has offices in 14 regions across the nation. It has also done civil, commercial, industrial, institutional, multi-family residential, and even power plant projects. Since 1989, the firm ranked third in the Top 20 Concrete Specialty Category. In 2015, the firm took the number one rank in ENR’s Top 20 Concrete Specialty Contractor and ranked 16th overall in ENR’s Top 600 Specialty Contractors list.

One of its most striking projects is the 83-story tower, Panorama. According to Forbes Magazine, it is one of the 13 projects changing the face of American cities. Within 23 hours, the firm was able to pour 11,677 cubic yards of concrete, breaking two records. As expected, the tower also won numerous awards with the most notable ones being ENR’s Award of Merit for Specialty Construction, ABC National’s Excellence in Construction award, and Sunshine State’s Safety Recognition Award. The featured project in this article is Solitaire, a 50-story building which required over 40,000 cubic yards of concrete and another one of the firm’s eye-catching projects.

Projects such as this are well-guided by one of the firm’s regional and territorial managers, Ken Fender. Fender has years of managerial and constructional experience and is known for his vigilance when it comes to producing high-quality projects. After graduating from Bowling Green State University’s Architecture course, he worked full-time with Baker Concrete Construction and served a number of local trade industry organizational boards, including Associated General Contractors (AGC) and the ACI.


7) Precision Concrete Inc.

One of the largest concrete construction firms in the southeast, Precision Concrete Inc. is most known for its reputation as a company capable of meeting short deadlines, and is experienced in a wide range of services. Some of the firm’s projects include podium structures, mid-rises, high-rises, and associated parking facilities. It also has experience building facilities for automotive, pharmaceutical, and high-tech industries. Some of these projects have won many awards and helped the company achieve high ranks. One of these projects, the Porsche North American Headquarters, garnered the American Concrete Institute’s first place award for the Mid-rise category.

In 2017, the firm also took 17th place as one of the Top contractors, and was featured in Concrete Construction and Engineering-News Record. The firm is also a member of several industry organizations, including the ACI, the AGCA, and the ASA.


Concrete Strategies

Though only recently established in 2005, Concrete Strategies is a member of organizations like the TCA, the American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA), the ACI, and the ASCC. The firm has also won numerous awards; it took the 16th rank in ENR’s recent list of top 20 firms in concrete and concrete strategies. The firm has also won the Golden Trowel Award—the most sought after World of Concrete Convention award in the concrete flooring industry.

The firm has a diverse set of capabilities, including architectural site cast concrete, structural concrete, flatwork, tilt-up, and all types of self-performed concrete construction for commercial and industrial projects. The firm’s president, Pat Moriarty, had early experience with self-performance of concrete services. With previous experience as a design-builder, he was able to gather the skills involving construction implementation, general contracting, and subcontracting.


5) Wayne Brothers

For over 32 years, Wayne Brothers has provided the Southeast with concrete construction and civil and infrastructure solutions. Because of its progressive culture, attention to design, selection of the most effective materials, and its investment in cutting edge technology, Wayne Brothers was included in ENR’s 2015 list of Top Specialty Contractors, where it took 16th place for the Overall category. In the previous year, it was included in the Top Specialty Contractors again, but was ranked 3rd for Concrete and 2nd for Site Development. Wayne Brothers also won the 2016 ABC National Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award, and the Construction Eagle Award in the previous year.

Though these awards were won thanks to the firm’s work ethic and great attention to detail, credit can also be given to firm CEO and president Keith Wayne. He has a commitment to quality that has been widely recognized in the industry with numerous awards, including the CAGC Pinnacle award, the 2017 Smart Ceo’s Corporate Culture Award, and the 2015 Associated Builders in Construction’s Excellence in Construction Eagle Award. Wayne was also recognized as ENR’s Southeast Specialty Contractor of 2018, and was one of the Top 600 Specialty Contractors for six years running.

One of the firm’s most striking projects is the Sierra Nevada Brewery. The project consisted of a 150,000 square foot bottling and packaging warehouse. The firm also performed the slab-on-grade, pile caps, grade beams, deep foundations, and constructed an 11,000 square foot tank.


Trademark Concrete

Established in 1997, Trademark Concrete specializes in a wide range of design and construction services, handling all types of commercial, industrial, and civil projects. During its 21 years of building, the firm has gained high recognition. It has won multiple awards, including three 2018 Safety Awards, and four recent Decorative Concrete Council Project Awards from the ASCC. The firm has also been featured in publications like Decorative Concrete and Concrete Construction, where the firm was named one of America’s top concrete contractors.

This recognition is due in part to founder Lance Boyer’s experience and knowledge. Besides being chairman of the ACI committee, he has a Decorative Concrete Finisher Certification, and developed an ACI book entitled Placing and Finishing Decorative Concrete Flatwork, which was made to raised the quality of education for decorative concrete. One of the firm’s most notable projects is Tarbut V’Torah Community Day school. Trademark Concrete provided varying concrete colors and textures for all the hardscape elements, including a cast in place amphitheater, retaining walls, seat walls, template sandblasting of symbols, letters and graphics, concrete paving, and banding.


Nibbi

Mario Nibbi first worked as a carpenter before word spread that he was a carpenter capable of quality results. In 1950, he and his brother Pete founded Nibbi Builders, a small business that grew into Nibbi—a firm known for the complex and iconic structures in the San Francisco bay area. The firm was ranked in ENR’s 2013 to 2017 list of Top 400 contractors, and the 2013 to 2016 list for Top Green contractors. The firm has also been featured in Portico Magazine, and received countless awards for some of its outstanding projects.

The firm recently won the 2018 AIA Committee on The Environment (COTE) Top Ten Awards for its work on the Nancy and Stephen Grand Family house, which was built to better serve the families with children receiving treatment in the children’s hospital in Mission Bay. This award winning project is a 92,125 square foot, four story, wood-frame-over-concrete-podium building that serves 80 families. Another noteworthy project is the 16-story Azure tower, which provides 66,965 square feet of market-housing in the Mission Bay district.


Shaw and Sons

For the past 50 years, Shaw and Sons has strived for perfection. From setting 1400-pound base plate templates on high rise buildings to simplistic cast-in-place concrete walls and distinguished patterns in hardscape paving, the firm follows a precise process that exhibits the firm’s accuracy in producing structural and aesthetic designs. In addition to structural concrete, the firm also specializes in architectural concrete, lithocrete, and oceansafe. Thanks to its expertise, the firm was featured in resource books, such as the 1st and 2nd Editions of the Architectural Concrete Reference Guide, Lithocrete Architectural Reference Guide, and Oceansafe Stormwater Management. Some of its projects have also won numerous awards. One of these projects is the Governor Deukmejian Courthouse, which garnered awards predominantly from Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and the ENR.

The team has completed over 800 structural projects and well over 1800 architectural projects. Some of its most notable works are the Getty Villas, the Griffith Observatory, and the Reagan and Nixon Presidential Libraries. Along with these is the Water Garden—a 1990’s office campus turned into a 17 acre sustainable creative office located in the heart of Silicon Beach, and The Broad—a contemporary art museum with honed and polished custom type II/III/IV cement concrete slabs for the first, second, and third floors. Shaw and Sons also provided the exterior front entry hardscape from the building line to the back of the city walls.


Largo Concrete

In 2018, ENR featured Largo Concrete as 6th in the top 20 concrete contractors nationwide based on annual revenue. The firm is known as a full-service, self-performing structural concrete, and general contractor, and has built over 1,000 projects across the southwest. The firm has been operating since 1989 and has over 1,900 employees with offices in California, Las Vegas NV, and Austin, TX. Largo Concrete has built multiple award-winning projects. Recently, Largo Concrete won the 2018 American Concrete Institute’s Pankow Award for its work on Disney’s Frontierland Expansion which consisted of tunnels, retaining walls, and an architectural concrete trestle bridge for the railroad in the Rivers of America attraction. Largo Concrete’s second Pankow Award in 2018 was for the Circa megadevelopment in downtown Los Angeles which featured twin 35 story residential towers across from Staples Center.

In 2015, Largo Concrete was named ENR California’s Top Specialty Contractor and was ranked as the top concrete contractor in the state. Some of Largo Concrete’s most notable projects include the renovation to the Dodgers Stadium in 2012 and The Great Wolf Resort in the Anaheim Resort District featuring two of the tallest and heaviest precast concrete panels in the country. In Northern California, Largo Concrete completed the 22-story Silvery Towers in San Jose with architectural columns designed out of plump and the Sufism Reoriented Sanctuary in Walnut Creek with 13 gently sloping domes, the largest spanning 80’ in diameter.
