14) Four Brothers Design + Build

4009 Georgia Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20011

The Johnsons—Alfred, Ben, Kent, and Leroy—are the four brothers behind Four Brothers Design + Build. Before establishing the firm, the brothers worked as woodworking apprentices, stacking wood and assembling cabinetry. This nine-to-five job didn’t stop the brothers from fitting remodeling into their schedule. The excellent craftsmanship they put in their work paid off as clients started to recognize their work and send them referrals. Their confidence grew with their clientele, and eventually they launched Four Brothers Design + Build in 2006.

The firm’s portfolio demonstrates versatility in design and construction as well as flexibility in project size. Four Brothers offers a broad array of services from whole home renovations to kitchen remodeling.

Four Brothers worked with a couple from Brookland, Washington D.C. on their modern kitchen transformation. The couple wanted to open up and enlarge their kitchen to connect it to the dining area. A bright yellow stove and a butcher block island added a personal touch. The firm balanced those colorful elements against a cool stone dust gray for the cabinets and light Caesarstone quartz countertops.

As a part of the renovation, Commonwealth upgraded the aesthetic fixtures, installed an exhaust hood, installed shelves and cabinets, and put down a new hardwood floor. The overall result: simple, clean beauty.

An environmentally conscious couple, Bill and Martha Sykora, bought a home in Maryland, then partnered with The Alexander Group to make their sustainable dream home come to life. A breakfast table and a wet bar are adjacent. A custom Ambrosia Maple countertop and backsplash were used for the wet bar and wall cabinets were installed for maximum storage.

The firm has been building in the D.C. area since 1987 and has been a constant recipient of awards from professional associations and publications.

Looking through its portfolio, clients can see the expertise that the firm brings to its remodeling projects. Carnemark transformed this cramped 1980s-styled kitchen into a modern kitchen haven. The remodel included tearing down wall storage and replacing it with an island to maximize space. With the wall down, the kitchen had an open floor layout, promoting an easy flow from end to end. A stainless double oven, a warming drawer, and an under-the-counter 60-bottle wine fridge allowed the kitchen to level up. This particular project brought Carnemark the NKBA Design Award and the NARI Contractor of the Year Grand Award for Residential Kitchen.

Gilday Renovations’ team had the privilege of collaborating with some of Metro D.C.’s most renowned architects as well as renovating the works of architects including Winthrop Faulkner who pioneered the modern architecture in Northwest Washington D.C. The Gilday team’s stellar work has earned the firm multiple awards and press features.

Just a nine-minute drive from Washington D.C., this home remodel in Cleveland Park won the 2013 Contractor of the Year Grand Award from NARI. The firm worked on this kitchen in collaboration with architect Larysa Kurylas. Gray and white tones fill the room creating modern appeal. Anthony Wilder is a consistent name in publications like Southern Home, Bethesda, Virginia Living, and Remodeler magazines. Its exceptional work received the Contractor of the Year awards from NARI, Chrysalis Awards, and the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Design awards.

A small kitchen in Washington D.C. duplex received a fresh upgrade from Anthony Wilder. The firm created a New York City loft-inspired design to elevate the atmosphere of the home. That sleek and modern design instantly made the home exceptional. The waterfall island transforms it into an eat-in kitchen. And an adjacent nook provides more room to entertain guests. A large framed glass window and door lead to an outdoor deck and provides generous natural light. All of these elements are tied together by a soft palette of cream colors and layering textures of wood, granite, and glass.

4) BOWA

7900 Westpark Dr. Suite A180, McLean, VA 22102

Larry Weinberg, along with Josh Baker, founded BOWA in 1988 after recognizing the slow growth in the construction market in the D.C. area. During its early years, Weinberg worked relentlessly on all aspects of the company, in and out of the office. This resulted in a growth from a crew of two with a $5k investment, to 27 contracts completed and approximately $310k in revenues by the end of the year.

BOWA’s portfolio captures the firm’s integrity in design and construction. We were smitten with the project pictured below. The modern-contemporary design radiates a cool and comfortable vibe. The sleek cabinetry and two islands provide clean lines and sharp angles, emphasizing a smooth flow of the kitchen to the dining area.

Publications such as Remodeling Magazine, Middleburg Eccentric, the Washington Post, and Home & Design have featured BOWA’s astonishing home remodels and custom homes. Recently, the firm was awarded a 2019 NARI Contractor of the Year Award in four separate categories including a Local Grand Award for a Residential Kitchen over $150k.

3) Landis

7059 Blair Rd. NW Suite #300, Washington D.C. 20012

Landis Construction—led by licensed architects Chris Landis and Ethan Landis—has been serving Washington D.C. and the metro area since 1990. Since that time, the firm has brought innovation to home construction. The firm uses the latest imaging technology: clients experience and walk-through their homes via Virtual Reality glasses. Aside from the virtual reality that the firm uses, even a quick glance at Landis Construction’s portfolio will convince you of its versatility when it comes to design and construction.

Landis worked on a remodel of a historic 1929 home in the Friendship Heights area of Washington D.C. The homeowners wanted an open kitchen, allowing them to entertain guests and maximize storage. Landis made a spacious kitchen possible by creating an adjacent pantry, thus subtracting a portion of occupied space. Large bank windows by the sink connect the kitchen to the backyard and deck. Finally, the firm created larger door openings to provide the area with better access to the breakfast nook and hallway.

This family-friendly kitchen won the 2014 NARI Metro D.C. Capitol Contractor of the Year Grand Award for Residential Kitchen over $120k. That wasn’t the first award, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. The firm has won Professional Remodeler Design Awards, NARI Metro D.C. Capitol Contractor of the Year Awards, and appreciative nods in publications like the Washington Post and Qualified Remodeler.

2) Case Architects & Remodelers

1327 14th St. Suite #200, Washington, D.C. 20005

The firm houses a team of project developers, designers, and craftspeople who bring years of experience. Together, the Case team creates a unique blend of creativity and comfort.

The firm’s expertise in design and construction earned multiple 2019 NARI Contractor of the Year awards for residential kitchen remodels in national and local categories. The firm has had the attention of the press for some time: the Kitchen and Bath Business, Washingtonian, John Eric Home, Washington Post, and the NKBA magazine have all featured Case’s work.

The Case Portfolio displays its design versatility. A wide range of projects can be seen here, including kitchen remodels in craftsman and modern design styles. Take this featured photo as an example. The couple who owned the home wanted to upgrade their kitchen to match the mid-century modern theme of the house. The new update displays an eclectic design that houses the innovative appliances that make food prep and baking a breeze. The handmade geometric backsplash and the two-toned melamine slab door cabinets complement the attractive flooring, and track lighting goes well with the chimney hood with waterfall edges.

Originally a small secluded kitchen, Michael Nash transformed it into an open layout kitchen that transitions smoothly from the kitchen to the dining and living area.
