When designing an office, it’s important to ensure that the workspace expresses the company’s culture and encourages collaboration. Enlisting the help of an architect will help you develop building systems that adapt to employees’ evolving needs. Doing so will turn your headquarters into a resource rather than just a destination.

LOHA: Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects

4106 West Jefferson Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90016

Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) is an award-winning architecture and urban design firm of twenty-five talented designers with offices in Los Angeles and Detroit. LOHA seeks to elevate the human condition via the built environment, operating on the belief that architecture functions within a layered context of political, environmental, and social structures. The firm works with a diverse group of stakeholders to deliver large-scale neighborhood plans, large mixed-use developments, supportive housing, and university residential complexes. LOHA has built over 100 projects across three continents and has been recognized with over 100 awards, including the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the California Distinguished Practice Award, and the AIA LA Firm of the Year Award.

Lorcan O’Herlihy, founder and design principal of LOHA, embraces architecture as a catalyst of change. Each project reflects Lorcan’s mindset that artistry and social connectivity are key to building vibrant spaces. The Architectural League of New York selected him as one of the eight “emerging voices” in the United States in 2006.

Driven by O’Herlihy’s passion and creative vision, LOHA has built a robust portfolio of work that includes the Grupo Gallegos Creative Headquarters and Gym. The office’s vibrant colors engage with the adjacent coastal lifestyle. An amphitheater-stairway creates a transition between departments while providing a collaborative meeting and event space. The existing ticket booth was transformed into a juice bar, and mezzanine-level conference rooms hover over the open floor plan below.

ITZEN

1800 N Bristol St, #C-418, Santa Ana, CA 92704

ITZEN is well-known in Santa Ana, California for championing exciting and fun spaces by providing excellent architecture, interior design, project management, and graphic design services. It takes a holistic approach to design that fulfills client needs while emphasizing sustainability. As a company, ITZEN is committed to building places that enrich the lives of individuals and communities and will continue to do so for future generations.

Jana SB Itzen, AIA, is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She also studied in Brisbane, Australia before founding ITZEN in 2011. She was later joined by her husband, William Itzen, AIA, who studied at Virginia Tech and Stanford University. Prior to starting ITZEN, the husband and wife spent over ten years contributing to significant projects at firms in Southern California and abroad.  Jana and William continue to build on ITZEN’s prowess in commercial design, resulting in the new offices for the Ameriprise private wealth advisors located in the heart of downtown.

The project consists of private offices and an open office financial workplace. The challenge for the project was determining how to separate the open, glass-walled executive offices from the “break room” while keeping the plan open. This difficulty was addressed by replacing a solid wall with custom fabricated metal screens that rotate on pivots installed in the floor and ceiling.  A high-end kitchen can be seen through the screens—an unexpected moment that pleasantly visually interrupts the corporate environment.
