When you think of Kansas you might think of Oz, gentle people, and lovely farmland, but it’s also a real estate hotbed. Kansas home values increased by six percent last year and, according to Zillow, this value will rise even more by than three percent in the coming year.

Since houses are more in demand in Kansas, you might think about your own Kansas kitchen. Why? Kitchen remodels are a wise investment. The kitchen is the most used room in the house, and when buyers come to visit, it’s often the room that stays in their mind the longest. And kitchen trends have pushed way beyond the traditional stove, fridge, and sink. If you want your kitchen to stand out, you might need to renovate.

The Kansas City Star notes that the number of remodelers in the construction industry is increasing, since renovating one’s space is affordable, and often greener, compared to building from scratch. The kitchen remodelers on this list can do a luxury remodel, and they can do a remodel on a tight budget, and either way, the value of your home will increase. We chose these contractors for their awards, their certifications, credentials of their principals, and their overall portfolio.

If you are thinking about remodeling a kitchen, we recommend checking each builder’s license with the local licensing board, speaking to past clients, and using our bidding system to get competitive quotes from at least 3 contractors. Getting multiple bids is the best way to ensure you get a fair price and that bids include the complete scope of work.

13) Bella Kitchens

7930 Santa Fe Dr. Suite #100, Overland Park, KS 66204

For Bella Kitchens owner and designer Jill Painter, the role of the kitchen is changing. It used to be just a place for cooking and casual dining, but today technology is reshaping the kitchen something resembling a living room.

Bella Kitchen’s projects can be seen as a kind kitchen-library fusion; they are meant to be inviting places to browse and contemplate. The open space concept, along with the center island with a rustic dark teal finish, provides shelving space for books. The elevated wine storage encourages lingering moments with a glass of red and a good read. Ratan chairs can be found on the side of the island, and allow it to serve double duty as a table.

Jill Painter has a specialization in space planning and design for kitchens and baths, a degree in Interior Design from Kansas State University, and 22 years of design experience. She and her gorgeous work has appeared in publications such as Kansas City Homes and Gardens and Kansas City Homes & Style.

5) Jericho Home Improvements

1954 Foxridge Dr., Kansas City, KS 66106

Jericho’s background is a Cinderella story. The firm began in a basement in 2009; six years later, it collected an impressive $12 million in revenue. It has also remodeled over 800 kitchens and rooms. CEO John Bartrom told Remodeling Magazine that the company made big strides in a short amount of time because of “hard work and careful planning.” Jericho Home also attributes its success due to media exposure, especially in radio and TV. Yet another success secret hiding in plain sight: hiring great people and treating them well. The firm has been awarded Remodeling Magazine’s Big 50 Award, and the President’s Award for Showplace, among others.

When it comes to kitchen remodels, Jericho Home provides free design services. And if a partial remodel is all that is required, Jericho knows how to give your kitchen a selective facelift on a budget. The firm offers a 100 percent money back guarantee.

4) Mission Kitchen & Bath

5845 Horton St. Suite #201, Mission, KS 66202

Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler Al Felman has owned and operated Mission Kitchen & Bath since 1977 and is now in their 25th year. It had won many awards since then, such as over 30 remodeling awards (REMY’s), as well as the Remodeler of the Year All-Star Award. It has also been awarded as Remodeling Magazine’s Big 50 Award in 2015, a NARI Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler since 2003 and has the highest rated by positive reviews for kitchen & bath remodeling in the market by Angie’s List. Part of the firm’s success is having a certified lead carpenter and in-house interior designer. The firm is willing to work with a client’s budget and has reasonable rates.

Mission Kitchen & Bath walks clients through a protocol when booking them for kitchen remodels. The firm wants to ensure that the homeowners have the calendar time for the remodel’s demands. The team will inquire about the role of new appliances in the makeover, and finally, they will ask a prospective client to list the elements they have always liked about the original kitchen so that decisions about retaining or reinvigorating those elements can be made. Then comes listing the things the client dislikes about their kitchen.

All of that preparation and discussion allows the client and the firm to decide what to prioritize. Before the project even begins they’ll have a clear idea how each of the new elements will serve its purpose, and precisely what the budget will look like.

3) KC Home Solutions

13480 S Arapaho Dr. Suite #101, Olathe, KS 66062

Principal Nick Shepard has worked many roles in construction across two decades. He started as a laborer on home build sites and then became one of Kansas City’s foremost custom home builders. One of Shepard’s greatest accomplishments was excelling as Vice President of Operations of a logistics company worth $25 million, even as the construction economy was waning. It was after that that he established KC Home Solutions.

KC Home Solutions is a nine-time KC NARI REMY Award winner and a 2016 KC NARI Remodel of the Year Best of Show Award winner. One of the most trusted remodelers in Kansas, he is both a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City and KC NARI.

2) Kitchen Design Gallery, Inc.

13406 Santa Fe Trail Dr., Lenexa, KS 66215

Kitchen Design Gallery is responsible for some of the most exquisite, functional kitchen remodels in Kansas. The firm has proven itself with numerous remodeler awards such as being the 2014 NKBA National Award Winner for Universal Design and the 2010 National Contractor of the Year (CotY) winner. Kitchen Design Gallery also won four regional CotY Awards. If that’s not enough, the firm also won the 2012 NARI REMY Award in Kitchen Remodel, the 2011 KCH&G Award for Best Kitchen Remodel, the 2010 NARI CotY Award for Regional Winner Residential Kitchen, and the 2010 NKBA Award Kansas/Nebraska Chapter for Best Ever Contest First Place Category Large Kitchen. This basket of prestigious awards points to Kitchen Design quality remodels that are beautiful and useful at the same time.

Some of the firm’s most attractive kitchen projects are rustic-inspired: the cabinets come in vivid colors but have a patina finish. And then there are the tiles with various patterns and designs: the result is a charming, eclectic look.

Another unique and notable project of Kitchen Design is a kitchen made for a senior couple. The kitchen was opened up, countertop workspace was increased, and appliances were fully integrated. Walls that separated the kitchen, the dining room, and the living room were removed so these areas can blend in, and the owners can have easy mobility.

1) Kitchen Studio

520 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez, Kansas City, MO 64108

In Kitchen Studio’s short 10 years of existence, it has already assembled a team of top quality contractors in Kansas for the remodeling needs of its clients. It has also won some impressive awards, like the Crystal Cabinetry 2013 Grand Prize Award and the People’s Choice Award. It was also given the KCH&G Remodel of the Year Gold Award in 2011.

Rarely do clients say that they feel like their kitchen is a five-star hotel, but that’s exactly what Susan Summerlin felt when Kitchen Studio remodeled her kitchen in Kansas City’s Country Club District. She made the remark after she saw the elegant, functional results.

Summerlin’s dream kitchen came via collaboration with Kitchen Studio, giving the firm pages of her magazine pegs. Kitchen Studio was able to deliver by giving her a kitchen that’s spacious, elegant, and comes complete with a breakfast nook. The kitchen also has enough space for cutlery, spices, and even has a special refrigerator for drinks. The list goes on: there’s a coffee bar, a floor-to-ceiling limestone fireplace, and original leaded glass windows. Rare caged chandeliers and a cool color scheme finished the look.
