Our home isn’t a place like any other, which is why we want to avoid mistakes and miscommunications as we go through the building process. A solution for this is to hire a general contractor at the beginning of the project to keep things on schedule and ensure that everything will go smoothly.

The last question one might ask of himself is – which firm should I trust? We answered this question by listing the top ten general contractors that serve Fairfield. Through taking a closer look at the firms’ portfolio, integrity, recognitions, reviews, and the principals’ credentials, we have found the best that can accommodate you as you build your home.

Peninsula Custom Homes

340 Potrero Ave, San Francisco, CA 94103

Perfecting the art of flexibility, Peninsula Custom Homes (PCH) applies its technical expertise to each project. From building modern estates to renovating historic chateaus, the firm always finds a way to execute the project as planned. They foster open communication from the cost estimation to the design stage, they practice principles of green building, and welcome innovation in design. For four decades, it has been in their practice to ask, to listen, to understand, and to deliver the client’s needs and the architect’s intent.

Featured in Architectural Digest, designer Atelier Ugo Sap’s vision and the client’s specific request to build something different were successfully brought to life by PCH. Combining modernism with 21st-century technology, PCH added distinctive features throughout the three-story Pacific Heights Victorian, from hand-painted hardwood flooring to exquisite custom-plastered ceilings. The updated classic style is visible at every corner, particularly in the custom metal and glass elevator. This elevator ascends to the glass-floored balcony and to the new roof deck that captures panoramic views of the City and the bay.

Jetton Construction

1117-A Virginia St, Berkeley, CA 94702

Bill Jetton apprenticed with a master builder in Mendocino, where all of his pursuits were off-grid. His projects include traditional water towers, barn restorations, a 250-feet pedestrian suspension bridge, and other alternative energy systems, such as small-scale hydroelectric. Thanks to these experiences, he is now leading an award-winning construction firm, Jetton Construction. His firm offers sustainable building practices, shows love for the craft, and exhibits caring service. Since 1980, the firm has completed over 500 significant projects in the Bay Area. One of these is this renovated modern home, tucked into the Claremont Canyon, optimizing beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay and its surrounding wildlife. AIA East Bay Home Tour was captivated by the unique details of this home and had it featured in 2015.

Alward Construction Co.

1035 Carleton St, Berkeley, CA 94710

Keith Alward, president of the firm, grew up on a ranch where the process of building was part of his daily life. He designed and built his Newport Beach Studio, completing it in 1963.  It became the ultimate bachelor pad for him as a recent high school graduate at that time. He then instilled these principles and the wisdom in his own firm, founding Alward Construction Co. in 1979  in Berkeley City.

Alward Construction understands that building is a collaborative activity.  Listening, helping, teaching allows the team to recognize the possibilities inherent in each point of view and is essential to every decision they make. This cooperative belief has created the quality company they have become—a company that builds outstanding residential and commercial projects. Included on the long list of award-winning projects by Alward Construction Co. is the delightfully remodeled home below. It was given a Merit Award by San Francisco Bay Area NARI and two recognitions from The Chrysalis.
