Known as “The First State”, Delaware is the second-smallest state and one of the most densely- populated states in the country. Like its industry, Delaware’s population is concentrated in the north, around Wilmington — the largest city in the state. Wilmington is also where the major coastal highways and railways pass through, from Pennsylvania and New Jersey on the north and east, into Maryland on the south and west.

Though Wilmington (like Newark and Newcastle) have the largest share in the state’s population, most of the firms that complete this list can be found in Lewes, Newark, and Rehoboth Beach. As many of these firms are based in locations near the bay, they are known to build beautiful beach houses, often exhibiting elaborate and decorative Queen Anne Revival styles. One of the state’s many historic homes is the Nemours Estate in Wilmington. A 300-acre country estate of late industrialist and philanthropist Alfred I. DuPont, the Nemours estate is a breathtaking mansion designed in the late 18th-century French style. This is a style that many designers and contractors of today still imitate.
