Named by early French explorers, Arkansas’ name is derived from the word ‘acansaw’, which means ‘downstream place’. In the 1980s, Arkansas was nicknamed ‘The Natural State’, for its natural beauty, clear lakes and streams, and abundant natural wildlife.

For more than 200 years, Arkansas has possessed a legacy of rich architecture. Since the late 17th and 18th centuries, a variety of architectural styles were used to construct the buildings around the state. From the simple log structures of the early settlers to the exuberant Victorian styles of the 1800s, Arkansas’ buildings reflect the architectural trends of the rest of the country while remaining unique to its location.

The general contracting firms on this list have proven their expertise by receiving awards for their work, appearing in publications such as At Home in Arkansas and Arkansas Life, and completing notable projects for local residents.
