BOWA

7900 Westpark Dr., Suite A180, McLean, VA 22102

BOWA specializes in luxury renovations that include master suites and kitchens as well as whole-house and whole-condo remodels. The firm has won over 250 local and national awards, including “Contractor of the Year” (CotY) multiple times from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Since its establishment in 1988, the company has been accredited by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as a Green Professional and Graduate Remodeler.

Originally BOWA’s Vice President of New Business Development and General Counsel, David Flyer has guided the team as it developed complementary product offerings. Now, as CEO, David steers BOWA’s long-term vision and strategy and ensures that BOWA maintains a world-class workforce. David manages all aspects of the company to provide an unsurpassed client experience—one vouched for by the homeowners of this split-level house.

Their 1970’s home was dark, cramped, and the sunken living room off the kitchen obstructed the flow of the space. The BOWA team started by relocating the kitchen to the back of the house and expanding into the existing porch. This move allowed for more countertop space and storage in the new, open-concept kitchen. To allow more natural light to flow throughout the main level, custom skylights were added over the new kitchen island. BOWA also leveled the adjacent sunken living room and installed new hardwood floors. The dining room was relocated to the location of the original kitchen and now benefits from the installation of a large bay window.

WINN Design + Build

100 W. Jefferson St., Falls Church, VA 22046

WINN Design + Build is a team of architects, interior designers, and craftsmen recognized by NARI for its residential design and construction services. As an Energy Star-certified business, it offers affordable green building approaches, materials, and technologies. Through the firm’s custom modular division, it provides environmentally-friendly modular additions that take less than half the time of a regular site-built addition to build. Apart from this, clients have access to the company’s web-based project management tool, which tracks a remodel’s status, schedule, and budget while allowing clients to communicate directly with the WINN team.

Owner Michael Winn founded the firm in 1996 and has been featured by HGTV, The Washington Post, Forbes, Entrepreneur, and the Washington Business Journal. He has led the firm in earning accreditation from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA), and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). After more than 20 years of running WINN, Michael played the role of both principal and client in renovating his family’s home in Northern Virginia.

The original house had some structural issues, so it was demolished and replaced with a 6,000-square-foot, timeless French provincial stunner. One of the most important rooms during the design-build process was the kitchen. In the original house, the kitchen was closed off. The new kitchen opens to a family room with nine-foot-tall windows that bring in ample sunlight. The focal piece of the kitchen—a black Lacanche oven and range—was imported from France.

Bowers Design Build, Inc.

6715 Whittier Avenue, Suite 200, McLean, VA 22101

Since 1990, Bowers Design Build, Inc. has completed hundreds of residential projects in the McLean, North Arlington, Oakton, Vienna, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Great Falls area. As one of Northern Virginia’s most respected design-build firms, it has collected many CotY Awards from NARI and is certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as Lead-Safe.

Bruce Bowers was a Project Manager for some of the largest developments in Northern Virginia before founding Bowers Design Build, Inc. He has guided the company in delivering architectural design services coupled with interior design services to make recommendations for plumbing, lighting fixtures, tile installation, cabinetry, and flooring. Daily on-site project management, detailed budgets, and dedicated timelines are at the core of Bowers’ approach.

An outstanding representative of its long portfolio of projects is this remodel for a family that needed better functionality for their home’s existing spaces. The Bowers team modified their existing garages to a larger bay two-car garage. This made space for a family foyer that included a larger entry space, a laundry room, and a powder room. While redesigning the kitchen, the team made space for an exterior door leading directly to the screened porch. A walk-in pantry was built in place of the small pantry, and the existing breakfast room was upgraded into a Hearth Side room complete with a fireplace.

Commonwealth Home Design

208-A Dominion Rd. NE, Vienna, VA 22180

Commonwealth has remodeled, redesigned, and built hundreds of houses across Northern Virginia for over 35 years. The firm has been awarded Top Remodeler by Washingtonian Magazine, the CotY from NARI, and the Chrysalis Award presented to remodelers for reflecting professional excellence in the residential remodeling industry.

While working for the Navy as an aerospace engineer, Kelvin Pierce honed his technical and organizational skills and created the framework for a highly successful home design-build firm. He uses his engineering aptitude while preparing budgets, writing specifications and construction schedules, and supervising project teams. Alongside his wife, a registered architect, Kelvin employs architectural staff as project managers. Doing so allows the NKBA-accredited firm to incorporate kitchen and bath design, built-ins, fireplace designs, and interior design into any project such as this rambler-style home in McLean.

Commonwealth opened up the home’s floor plan by strategically removing the walls, widening the doorways, and installing new structural beams. For the kitchen, the project team installed custom painted cabinets and a new commercial-grade stove/range on the exterior wall.  The long peninsula island that blocked off the kitchen from the breakfast area was replaced with a large, functional, eat-at island that now includes a microwave drawer. Commonwealth upgraded the foyer, remodeled a curved staircase leading to the basement, and opened the wall to install a unique curved wall for the powder room.

Mayflower Construction Group

8466 Tyco Rd., Vienna, VA 22182

Mayflower Construction Group is an interior renovation and restoration firm that builds remarkable kitchens and bathrooms. It does home-restoration work as well, providing whole-home fire and water damage restorations. The firm uses environmentally friendly materials, responsible waste disposal, and all the latest technologies and equipment. Fully licensed and insured, the firm has developed an outstanding reputation for quality work.

Alex Arjanstev, the project manager, has an extensive background as an operations professional. He applies his experience as a seasoned managing partner to all of the firm’s projects. In one kitchen remodeling project, Alex supervised his team as it worked through the challenge of not having enough room for an island. Their solution was to use symmetry to make sure the open kitchen still felt united. The crew installed gray shaker-style cabinets, paired nicely with a white marble patterned quartz countertop and a marble beveled subway tile backsplash.

For another project, the crew built a colorful island centerpiece with brushed gold hardware. Wall cabinets were installed to make the kitchen feel more open and allowed for open shelving, decorative hoods, and a full wall backsplash.

Panorama Remodeling

8233 Old Courthouse Rd Suite 360, Vienna, VA 22182

Panorama Remodeling is a high-quality home contractor focused on kitchen, bathroom, and basement remodeling. Its services encompass flooring, painting, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and decking. The owner, George Katan, directs the Panorama Remodeling professionals on every task it takes on with utmost precision from start to finish.

Panorama comes up with multiple options and makes adjustments to fit every clients’ needs. It did a complete gut renovation of a client’s kitchen, bathroom, and floors, as well as a three-story addition. As work progressed on the house, George realized that the electrical work was very old and original to the 1941 house, and it might be prudent to update, especially since the walls were already open.

The company demonstrated the same prowess in carpentry work when one of its clients turned to it to fix their flooded basement. Panorama remodeled the basement, built a new shed, and did the landscaping for their backyard. George gave them a fair and detailed cost and time estimate. He guided the clients through many style and structural decisions. He also showed up at the beginning of every day to address any of their concerns and made sure the workers were on track.

Govan Builders

Govan Builders provides design, architecture, and construction throughout the Northern Virginia area. Since 2005, the company has remodeled hundreds of residential homes and built several luxury homes from the ground up.

This Vienna Home is a prime example of Govan Builders’ craftsmanship, attention to detail, and technical ability. The homeowners wanted a design that used their existing footprint as the starting point and expanded upward. The result was a Craftsman-inspired home with a large open floor plan on the main floor. The Govan Builders crew created a huge kitchen and a family room with a new fireplace and a separate dining room. Some special features of this unique home include an expanded front porch, a prefinished Hardie cement siding, a Dual Zone HVAC system, and a Jack and Jill kids’ bathroom. After turning over the keys of finished remodels to new homeowners, the company’s maintenance and repair division offers a warranty and quality home care.

Virginia Home design

8131 Prescott Dr. Apt 103, Vienna, VA 22180

After over 20 years in the construction industry, Tomas Zuokas founded Virginia Home Design to deliver residential renovation, remodeling, construction, and staging services. The firm specializes in bathroom remodels and kitchen remodels, simultaneously excelling in floor replacement, carpentry framing, and drywall repair. Its team works closely with clients to create an environment that is a manifestation of their needs, whether it is a single room or an entire home. Offering free initial consultations, the firm employs open communication as a key to achieving the client’s desired results and prioritizes meeting budget and scheduling requirements.

The company’s proven project management process stood out when its team remodeled a kitchen, two bathrooms, and opened a wall between the kitchen and dining room. They were able to quickly adjust to major project delays while remaining professional and responsive. Another client looked to Tomas and his crew to gut their bathrooms, upgrade their fixtures, and do their plumbing. The team updated their baseboards and door frames and added pocket and barn doors. The flooring (wood, tile, and carpet) was replaced and steps were built to make access to the large patio easier. On top of that, the kitchen was remodeled: the floor, counters, backsplash, appliances, and lighting were all updated.

Nova Contracting

2429 Hunter Mill Rd, Vienna, VA 22181

Nova Contracting provides a wide range of residential services, including new home construction, structural remodeling, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, and handyman services. It is licensed in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia; it was founded by Greg Kunstbeck in 2002. As a turnkey company, Nova Contracting manages projects from start to finish, including design services, pulling together all the required permits, drawings, designs, and scheduling. Its experienced builders are experts in residential and commercial builds as well as plumbing, drywall, foundation, flooring, and painting.

One of its most challenging projects involved removing a wall that blocked off the kitchen from a wide, open floor plan, installing lights, and painting the room in one week. The Nova Contracting team gave helpful advice and solutions to unanticipated problems, for example, adding tasteful cedar planks to cover unfinished walls left by the previous owners.

The team delivered the same level of craftsmanship in upgrading a large kitchen, a laundry room, closets, a dining room, and the master bedroom after they had been damaged by a water pipe that burst. Greg was at the multi-million dollar 8500-square-foot house the evening the pipe burst to make sure the water was turned off, and brought his crew the next day and they started work immediately. The client was impressed by the quality of the workmanship, which they deemed as good as or even better than that of the original builder of the house.
